Summer Revealing – What our clothes reveal about our hearts – (23,000 words) – When you think about modesty, where do your first thoughts go? Do you think about your clothes, someone else’s clothes, or do you think about your heart?
Modesty always begins in the heart, not in your clothes. Your first call to action is to address your heart before you address our attire because sin comes from within, not from without.
Each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. – James 1:14 (ESV)
Your internal adorning will determine your external adorning. If you align your heart with Christ, for the purpose of putting His beauty on display to the world, then what you wear will not be much of an issue. This is why most of the content in this book addresses the inward struggle with sex, sexuality, and sexual temptation.
My hope is that the Spirit of God will do a great work in the heart of every reader. By the time you get to the end of this book, where I finally talk about the clothes we wear, you will already be in the sweet spot.
Drawing attention to ourselves by “over-modesty” or by “giving sneak peeks” of our sexuality are not biblical goals. We have one modesty goal, which is to put the beauty of Christ on display. Dressing in a way that is interpreted as culturally weird does not do that. Dressing in a way that captures the lusty looks of others also does not do that.
The modesty sweet spot is to not draw positive or negative looks by what we wear but to draw engagement by how we interact with our family and the culture around us.
